For 20 years, we've granted your wish for a better rate.

See a falling star, wish for a better rate?

Over 20 years ago, that wish drove Dan Eisner to start True North Mortgage — to offer Canadian homeowners a better way to mortgage than being held captive by a big bank.

Over $34B in Funded Mortgages. Today, True North Mortgage has become a top national mortgage brokerage, winning client trust, 5-star reviews, and industry awards year after year by setting a high bar for a simplified mortgage experience that saves homeowners time, money, and stress.

With its extensive online network of virtual brokers and in-person stores across Canada, your future savings continue to look bright.

Here's a look at the past 20 years.

How True North Has Grown

True North Mortgage Timeline: 2006 to 2026

No Fees, Great Rates

This original True North slogan dominated the walls in the first stores. The idea, which hasn't changed, was unique — that a simple, free mortgage service could provide a home buyer or owner with personalized, unbiased advice and a better rate and mortgage.

The Best of a Bank and Broker

In fact, True North Mortgage was the first to disrupt the mortgage industry by merging the concept of a bank's brick-and-mortar branches with a team of salaried, highly trained brokers, providing volume rate discounts and the ability to source your best mortgage solution from many lenders, not just one.

Then, in 2016, True North became a CMHC-approved lender (not an easy quest) with THINK Financial, offering its clients another mortgage option beyond the big banks, with exclusive in-house mortgage rates and products that have saved Canadian homeowners thousands.

Pens, phone number — and a name.

True North Mortgage started small. One person, to be exact. Dan Eisner, a licensed mortgage broker. He bought the True North Mortgage name in 2004, and it came with just a box of pens, a basic website, and a phone number.

Working out of his home to start, he gathered clients and developed his concept: hire more brokers and pay them a salary rather than lender commissions — freeing up his team to offer impartial advice to put True North clients' mortgage needs first.

His early strategy eventually set the tone for industry disruption: rigorous training and honest mortgage guidance that differentiated True North from a bank rep's limited knowledge and an independent broker's commission-based service.

Old and new website side by side

So many (mortgage) digital firsts.

"Innovation is at the heart of what we do — I want our brokers to have good quality conversations with our clients, whether it's online, over the phone, or in person." – Dan Eisner

True North Mortgage has always been at the forefront of innovating and delivering a better digital experience. We were early to online rate ads, creating an easy online mortgage application, great calculators, and behind-the-screen systems that streamline communications, document handling, rate discounts, product choices, and mortgage underwriting.

Our website back in the 2000s, compared to now, offers a retro look at just how far we've come and how far we can now take you, with ease.

A company that grows together — stays together.

True North Mortgage has always placed company support and culture at the forefront of its mission to help homeowners.

Many of our brokers and staff are longtime team members, contributing to a fun and productive work environment alongside newer employees.

Ongoing training, support, get-togethers, celebrations, and acknowledgements have helped our company grow and pass along the good mortgage feelings.

The next 20 years start now.

We've only just begun. It's been an amazing adventure, and we're grateful to our clients, staff, vendors, and everyone who has helped along the way.

The arrival of AI has introduced another level of change, yet we've doubled down on our commitment to use technological innovation where it helps, while still keeping it real — in human terms, that is.

Mortgages are complex, and we take pride in guiding you through your process while helping you save. We're real people who care about your mortgage, now and later.

What does later look like? We're excited to find out.
